Spring has finally sprung in Britain! Is that the Sun we see, hesitantly coming out through the clouds? As nearly everyone comes out to enjoy these rare days of sunshine, here are a few tips to make sure your skin looks good while remaining well-protected.
Is Your Skin Protected?
The sun is the No 1 cause of ageing, so make sure you protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays. The medium SPF you have in your foundation or moisturiser might be enough for regular day to day use, but if you are going to be in the sun for an extended period of time, be sure to slap on that high SPF (30+) sunblock and put a hat and shades on. True, you will need some vitamin D but don't overdo it - Remember, a tan is a sign of skin damage so it's better to fake it in this case! If you are concerned about sunscreen and nanoparticles, choose a physical sunblock where the active ingredients are Titanium Dioxide and/or Zinc Oxide.
Fake it till you make it
Fake tan on your face? Make sure you are using a formulation that suitable for your face or you might break out (the ones for the face are less heavy formulations). One good option is to use a facial moisturiser with a hint of self tanner. If you're scared that you might make a mistake, use an instant, washable self tanner – these are removable with soap and water at the end of the day, and you don't have to worry about streaks as you can immediately see what you are putting on. Just like with the regular version, wash your hands thouroughly after application.
Are you wearing the right foundation shade?
Many of us develop a warmer complexion in the spring/summer months – it might benefit for you to wear a slightly darker foundation shade than your usual. However, do NOT make the rookie mistake of using foundation to make your skin look more tanned – that's what bronzers are for!
Luckily, unlike liquid foundation, there's no 'tide-line' when wearing mineral makeup so you can usually get away with it even if you are a shade or two away from your natural skin colour.
